Recycling Nerd HQ

The bin scanner · Australian rules

Point. Snap. Right bin.

Snap whatever you're about to throw out. The scanner tells you which bin it goes in, what to do first, and one properly nerdy fact about it.

  • Australian bin colours, the scrunch test and the credit card rule, built in.
  • Knows your state's 10c refund scheme, and whether your council has FOGO or a glass bin.
  • Spots the sneaky ones: soft plastics, coffee cups, batteries, wine bottles.

Built for one particular Recycling Nerd, who already knew all of this.

Know your lids

Australia has one standard for lid colours. What each council accepts still varies, so check yours on Recycling Near You.

Loose, never bagged

Bagged recycling goes to landfill. Sorters can't open bags, and the bags jam the machines.

Empty, not spotless

Scrape it and give it a quick rinse. It doesn't need to sparkle.

The scrunch test

If plastic scrunches into a ball and stays there, it's soft plastic. Keep it out of the yellow bin.

The credit card rule

Anything smaller than a credit card falls through the sorting machines. Caps go back on their bottles.

Batteries, never

Batteries and vapes start fires in trucks and sorting plants. Take them to a B-cycle drop-off.

If in doubt, leave it out

One wrong item can spoil a whole load. Or scan it and find out.
